Expectation can mean many things—expectation for emotional reciprocation, for sexual gratification.

It implies a certain kind of investment, and with any investment there is chance of failure (pain) as well as success (pleasure). 

The term expectation is expressed in a variety of metrics, but these metrics behave the same way.
